Random Wondering

By Renee Bess

What follows is a series of random thoughts or “mind wonderings” I was able to capture as they floated by. Thanks for allowing me to share them with you.

  • ·         I wonder what it’s like to be a woman at the RNC and know one of the party’s platform planks denies your sovereignty over your own body. What’s it like to be a black GOP’er and know many of the other convention attendees hold you in the same low regard they hold President Obama simply because you share the President’s ethnicity? What’s it like for the LGBT Republicans who know some members of the party’s faithful believe you can pray away the gay while others wish you would disappear altogether? What’s it like to be a black LGBT Republican convention-goer? Never mind. My brain is starting to hurt.

  • ·         I wonder who really benefits from the existence of Facebook’s Timeline? Whose tasks are made easier by being able to view a person’s entire FB posting history?

  • ·         I wonder how long Facebook continues to post your Timeline after you’ve timed out/died?

  • ·         I wonder why Condoleezza Rice considers her admission to the Augusta National Golf Club to be such an honor, when she and all of America’s female golfers never should have been excluded in the first place.

  • ·         I wonder why all of us LGBT authors don’t consider ourselves “activist writers.” The genre within which we write doesn’t matter. It could be traditional romance, mystery, crime procedural, speculative fiction… The mere act of writing about characters like us and having our stories published represents bold political activism which has the power  to shatter the oppressive roadblocks to our civil and human rights. I wonder what literary trends our community of writers will forge if November’s election yields a Romney/Ryan/Rove victory.

  • ·         I wonder why it is that the more I write, the more I write.

  1. I love your random wondering, Renee! After many days of dealing with the GOP here in my city, and listening to them, I also wonder what it's like to be not only lesbian and black, but any woman, cop, firefighter, teacher, student, senior citizen or anyone who isn't making millions of dollars. Why are they cheering the GOP? It boggles the mind.

"...writing about characters like us...represents bold activism..." I too, wish more folks in our community truly looked at our writing that way. Whether they want to admit it or not, challenging the status quo is always bold. If you write LGBT fiction, embrace your activism!

    Nice job, Renee.

  2. Indeed! Thanks for the thought provoking thoughts, Renee! I especially appreciate the thought of all of us as activist writers. Sometimes we lose sight of who we really are. It's always good to have someone hold up a mirror and say, "Remember who you really are."
